About Manchester's DNA

Building a community of practice

Developing a Community of Practice

This project brings academics from around the university and community practitioners from Manchester together to work towards  collaboration and co-production. Through shared learning and the intervention of key community facilitators we will establish working collaborations that will lead to genuine coproduction.

The community of practice revolves around the complete printed genome in the MRI library. This is one of only two printed genomes in the UK. The printed genome is an unusual, innovative, unique resource in Manchester for medical communication and engagement with genetics. The focus on the printed genome will allow the development of co-production and collaboration between UoM and communities around Manchester. By using this one object we discuss multiple issues and consider ways of approaching challenges. The events focus on the printed genome as a material object that can be understood and illuminated in several ways. The emphasis is on community-led discussion of key issues including identity, genetic health, community, migration, scientific practice, medical awareness, digital access, place, and creativity.

Workshops and Collaboration

Our community of practice is led by our collaborating community institutions. These are Olympias Music Foundation, Elizabeth Gaskell House, George House Trust, Manchester Central Food Bank and the Contact Theatre. Members from these institutions and their communities will come to all of the workshops.

Through our series of workshops and collaborations we have built working relationships, a community of practice.
